Grower

Grower

Turcieflor/Pierre Turc have been a specialist grower for more then 70 years.

In 1944 we started producing bulbs, after which we became an expert in cut flower production and today we produce over half a million pot plants per year.

Our specialities, due to our in house breeding program, are alstroemerias, agapanthus and tulbagias, however we also grow a large range of cannas, fuchsias, arums, begonias and others for the garden centre market and other growers alike.
Our ‘savoir faire’  is the result of many years of growing and breeding experience combined with the expertise and professionalism of our entire team.

Horticulture is a seasonal profession and is largely dependant on the weather and natural growing cycle. Our climate here in the Loire Valley is relatively calm and warm with above average light levels, enabling us to manage the excellent quality of the plants year round.

A typical year at Turcieflor/Pierre Turc:

  • Autumn

Repotting putting into production starts here too. Our in-vitro (tissue culture) young plants start arriving from the lab at this point too.

  • End of January

The last pots are put into production and the selling period starts.

  • Spring

Our peak selling season, through until the end of May.

  • Summer

Emptying and cleaning down of the green houses in preparation for another cycle.
Planting in the open fields take place at this time too.

Breeder

Breeder

Turcieflor/Pierre Turc have been a breeder of alstroemerias and agapanthus for over 25 years.

Each year, we breed around a dozen new varieties here at the site in Mazé. They are introduced into the lab for multiplication and are

ubsequentlytested for performance. We are always looking for something a little different to the varieties already available in the market place.

The diversification could be in the foliage, the flower colour / form or the plant height for example. We are always striving to develop the hardiest of plants in order that they can survive the harshest of winters, the most persistent of pests and illness.

We believe that each step towards developing new and exciting varieties enables to enrich the genetic diversity of the species.

It is true that sometimes the work of a breeder is more luck than judgement or creation. In order to find ‘the’ new variety, sometimes you just have to wait and see what happens and put faith in the power of mother nature.
