Cannas are rhizome based plants and originates from Central America and are descendants of the Cannaceae family which contains over 10 species. The canna plant consists of bunches of brightly coloured flowers atop tall green, purple or variegated foliage. This structural plant can offer you another dimension to your beds and borders. It is upright, offers exquisite colour and looks quite like no other. Categorised by height and then foliage colour, our extensive range can offer you the choice and the flexibility to make a beautiful bed or border even more exceptional. We have selected for you what we feel to be the best of the bunch.
The must have’s:
Angèle Martin: This beautiful tall canna, standing at 1.5m with purple foliage is simply sublime with its salmon coloured flowers.
Marabout: A giant at 2.5m, it’s green foliage and bright red flowers is just perfect at the back of flower beds and alongside pathways.
Stuttgart: a beautiful, variegated variety which is sure to add another dimension to your garden.
Plant then out in the Spring time in a well drained soil, preferably with a good fertiliser to help them get going. They will flower right throughout the summer period.
Due to its size and rapid growth, the canna needs space to grow and we recommend that you leave a 50cm distance when planting out. The canna is renowned for being resistant to illness and predators, however they again are a favourite meal for snails and slugs so please take usual precautionary measures. Canna’s do not like the frost, so we recommend you either harvest your rhizomes and keep them dry over winter or you cut back the leaves and cover the base of the plant with a suitable mulch. Cannas are very easy to grow and harvest. They will give you the pleasure of offering up flowers all throughout the summer. We are sure you won’t be disappointed.

Tulbaghia is a bulbous / rhizomatous plant, from the alliaceae family. Originally from South Africa, it is called 'wild garlic' there because of its taste and medicinal properties. Its flowers, tubular in shape, are grouped at the top of thin stems in the form of large umbels - hence its strong resemblance to a small agapanthus. There are two main families of tulbaghias: the violacaea with its fine green foliage, the variegata with its wider variegated foliage. The varieties of tulbaghia are available in a palette of colors ranging from purple to white, through a multitude of shades of pink. Tulbaghia is a very floriferous plant, its flowering extends from June until frost.
Like its cousin the agapanthus, the tulbaghia thrives in well-drained soil, and a sunny exposure. You can plant it in a border, a bed, or in a pot.
This plant is easy to grow, requiring only a small amount of water. This perennial is perfectly resistant to heat / drought. Tulbaghia tolerates the cold quite well, as long as you remember to cover it with mulch in winter - or to put in the pots if possible. Its long summer flowering, until frost, makes it the new star of winter gardens. Indeed, the tulbaghia brings a touch of color in the autumn massifs.
In the garden, the smell given off by tulbaghia has the advantage of warding off parasitic insects (such as aphids for example). We also recognize the fungicidal effect of its roots in the soil. In the vegetable garden, plant it rather on the edge because this perennial does not like to be disturbed. The fragrant flowers of tulbaghias attract pollinating insects.
Tulbaghia is an edible plant. Its delicate little flowers taste like garlic, they will go wonderfully with your summer salads, butters or flavored mayonnaise!
The agapanthus is from the Lillacees family, and is a tall, majestic, perennial plant. They offer up beautiful, globe shaped flower heads, each one consisting of a number of smaller, star shaped flowers. This rhizome based plant descends from a dozen of species, with the most common being the Praecox and the Africanus varieties. The flowers of an agapanthus are simply spectacular. The stems can be very tall (over 1.5m) or compact and can offer up flower sizes of over 25cm’s. The range consists of flowers in various degrees of blue, grey or white, with new varieties appearing on the market all the time. The Turcieflor / Pierre Turc range of agapanthus offers you a spectacular collection of tall, compact, evergreen and deciduous varieties of over 20 varieties, each one a result of our own breeding and testing.
A few little gems of our collection:
Within the collection, we are proud to offer you the spectacular Queen Mum variety, a blue & white bi-colour flower. The variegated foliage of the Silver Moon variety is something quite special too,
whilst our award winning Vallée de la Loire variety is our darkest variety and one of our best selling varieties.
Originating from South Africa, agapanthus love to be positioned in full sun and require moderate watering. If you plant them out in the Spring in a rich, well drained soil, you will be able to enjoy their beautiful flowers through the summer months. Agapanthus are naturally sensitive to harsh frosts. Cover your garden plants with a suitable mulch and where possible bring in or suitably cover your pots. Agapanthus are not difficult to grow, water lightly and regularly, do not let the roots sit in water for long periods and give your plants a feed with a suitable fertiliser at the start of the growing season. After that, sit back, relax and enjoy your beautiful flowers all summer long.
